Summer Orca Cards

Dear Parent or Guardian:

This message is to inform you of changes to your child’s ORCA card through the Seattle District and City of Seattle’s ORCA Opportunity Program. The ORCA program is funded for the 2018-2019 school year to offer ORCA cards to eligible middle school and all high school students.  ORCA cards will now be extended through the Summer, with an expiration date of August 31st, 2019 in which cards will deactivated.

This Summer extension only applies to those students who have claimed their ORCA card by June 20th, 2019.

Replacement ORCA cards during the Summer may be acquired by contacting one of the following:

ORCA card requests will be processed weekly and must be picked up at the Seattle Public Schools Building located at 2445 3rd Ave. S Seattle, WA 98134. ORCA cards will not be mailed, no exceptions.

Students are responsible for keeping their assigned ORCA card in good condition through the Summer. Reporting a lost, stolen or damaged ORCA card should be done immediately so we can deactivate the card to prevent unauthorized use.

Nova Alums in the News (1.21.19)

BRIDGE WEEK

Bridge Week is Jan 31, Feb 1, 4,  and 5. Also called Nova Con, this 4-day long series of workshops and classes hosted for the students of Nova High School. Nova Con happens twice a year, at the beginning of Fall and Spring semesters. During the first four days of each semester, students engage with workshops and community building events. Facilitators teach one-hour classes that allow teachers the time to meet individually with students to craft their unique educational experience. For Nova Con teaching details and a volunteer form, see the FoN Events page. Nova can’t provide this individual educational experience without the support of folks like you!  Can't take time to teacher? Consider providing fuel to teachers and students. Refreshment sign-up HERE.

NOVA ALUMS IN THE NEWS

Our alumni are making the news. Max Paradiso wrote an article recently about preserving the sound of the Stradivarius by quieting the town of Cremona, Italy. It was featured in the New York Times. Read about it here.

Congratulations to Azura Tyabji, Seattle Youth Poet Laureate. Not only does she represent her city—she now represents the West Coast! Azura was just named a national ambassador for the National Youth Poet Laureate Competition. She will be performing at the National Commencement at the Library of Congress April 4, 2019 in Washington, DC. Read more about the Youth Poet Laureate organization at http://youthlaureate.org/

Take Action for Levies

The levies passed! Now what? While the McCleary decision that requires the state to fund schools itself did not cap levy distribution, there are caps that the won't lift to allow SPS to access the money it needs to meet the basic education requirements, which decreases what we can spend per child.

Lifting the levy lid - #liftthelevylid - is requesting that we change our formulation to receive funding from the renewed levies.  Our taxes for our students.

This event is not to be confused with the big Nova CRAFT FAIR! coming in Spring. We look forward to letting you know more about the Craft Fair/auction later.

Nova Teen Clinic is Coming!

Nova is receiving funds from the recent levy to establish the Teen Clinic. THANK YOU to all who supported the levy vote and to those who contacted our Seattle city council members in support of the budget amendment for $100,000 towards the clinic. The clinic will serve all Nova students during school hours. It will specialize in providing services for LGBTQ+ students, who are often an under-served population in terms of healthcare. The Seattle School district is scheduled to begin an evaluation of the Horace Mann building for possible clinic locations soon.  More information to come.

Seattle School Beat

This week the Seattle School Beat newsletter includes tips for parent teacher conferences, winter weather notification information, and MORE. See SPS NEWS

Extra! Extra! (1.13.19)

Welcome Back Lydia!

Lydia (Winnie) returns to Nova on Monday, January 14 to resume her role on the teaching staff! We are very grateful to all those who gave donations through the Go-Fund-Me site to facilitate her return by contributing to the fund for teacher salaries. The Go-Fund-Me campaign will remain open to further fund teacher salaries to compensate for the loss of staff earlier this year.

Winter Coat Drive (because it's cold)
The Nova student POC committee is holding a winter coat drive for the Peace in the Streets by Kids from the Street center for homeless teens. PSKS is one of our local teen shelter and resource centers. Did you know that about 10% of Garfield and Nova students experience housing and food insecurity? Drive ends JAN 29. Outerwear may be dropped off in the bins next to the Nova front office. Cold folks thank you.

Introducing the NEW FoN WEBSITE
Nova volunteers have been working with staff and students tirelessly to bring our FoN website and SPS Nova site into the present day. The FoN site is live. SPS updates are planned for next week. CHECK. IT. OUT. Friendly navigation, tons of resources, current calendar, testimonials, past newsletters, and much, more!  Steer your peeps to the site if they want to begin exploring Nova. Check back often. Big thanks to Kristin C., Hugh S., Lisa G., Lucas, Marla C., Nico L. for time and effort in making the FoN site updates happen. Feedback welcome!
